Freedom of the Press: Crash Course Government and Politics #26
Today, Craig is going to finish up our discussion of the First Amendment with freedom of the press. Today, Craig is going to finish up our discussion of the First Amendment with freedom of the press. Like an individual's right to free speech, the press has a right, and arguably responsibility, to tell the public what the government is doing. But of course there are some complications in doing so, like if that information will compromise national security or wrongfully discredit an individual. When considering Edward Snowden's NSA disclosures or Julian Assange's Wikileaks, it's just as important as ever to understand the role of the press in informing the public as well as our role as citizens in staying informed.

Video shot by Mark Schierbecker--- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1S3yMzEee18 --COLUMBIA, Mo. — A video that showed University of Missouri protesters restricting a student photographer’s access to a public area of campus on Monday has ignited discussions about press freedom. Video shows Tim Tai, a student photographer on freelance assignment for ESPN trying to take photos of a small tent city that protesters had created on a campus quad. Concerned Student 1950, an activist group that formed to push for increased awareness and action around racial issues on campus, did not want reporters near the encampment. The video also shows Melissa Click, an assistant professor of mass media at the University of Missouri, ordered a journalist to leave an area where demonstrators had gathered on campus.
Click shouted "I Need Some Muscle" to rally students to forcibly remove journalist Mark Schierbecker from the public space.
Protesters blocked Mr. Tai’s view and argued with him, eventually pushing him away. At one point, they chanted, “Hey hey, ho ho, reporters have got to go.”
“I am documenting this for a national news organization,” Mr. Tai told the protesters, adding that “the First Amendment protects your right to be here and mine.”
The protesters accused him of acting unethically and disregarding their requests for privacy.
“What is so hard about respecting our wishes?” one protester asked.
“Because I have a job to do,” Mr. Tai answered. That elicited a retort: “We don’t care about your job.”

Afshin Rattansi goes underground on press freedom in the wake of the Paris terror attacks on the offices of Charlie Hebdo. Dickie Arbiter, former press secretary to the Queen, dismisses the allegations that Prince Andrew had sex with an underage girl as ‘nonsense’ and says the problem is he ‘hasn’t been very good at picking his friends.’ We look at PMQs, with MPs demanding reasons why the Chilcot inquiry has not been published, and Cameron alleging Miliband claimed he wanted to ‘weaponise’ the NHS. And the MHRA regulatory body has received nearly 100,000 reports of faulty medical equipment – linked to nearly 25,000 deaths and injuries – with them warning the real figure could be five times higher.

As Turkey gears up for its parliamentary elections the treatment of the media has become a focal point of criticism of the ruling party.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been accused of trying to muzzle newspapers critical of his Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the run-up to the June 7 vote.
In the past week alone, Erdogan has publicly accused the editor of the Cumhuriyet newspaper of espionage and slammed the New York Times for holding a grudge against him and Turkey itself.
Erdogan has targeted media outlets associated with the reclusive US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen.
Gulenists, who once supported the AK Party, have turned, and Erdogan accuses the movement of trying to bring down the government.
Talking us through the story are: Bulent Kenes, the editor-in-chief of Today's Zaman; Can Dundar, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet; Mehmet Karaca, the Ankara editor-in-chief of ATV; and Besir Atalay, the deputy chair and spokesman for the AKP.

Since Poland's right-wing Law and Justice party won the country's parliamentary elections in October, the media landscape has been undergoing a series of transformations.
The party led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski is anti-Russian, distrustful of Germany and suspicious of immigrants. And with its strong emphasis on what it calls traditional Polish values, the government clearly wants domestic media organisations to get behind its nationalist message.
It has made significant changes to the public broadcaster in Poland, passing a media law that gives the government the power to directly appoint the heads of TVP - Poland's public broadcaster - and other state-owned media outlets.
That legislation has raised concerns in Brussels, where European Union officials have threatened to throw the book at Poland for what they see as a blow for pluralism and press freedom.
But the EU has had little influence on a similar turn of events in Hungary, where Victor Orban's Fidesz party has reshaped the country's media in its own, ultra-conservative, image. So is there any reason to believe things will turn out differently in Poland?
Talking us through the story are: Krysztov Skowronski from the Polish Association of Journalists; Jaroslaw Kurski at Gazeta Wyborcza; journalist Attila Mong; Elda Brogi from the European University Institute; and TVP2 chairman Maciej Chmiel.
On Our Radar this week: Two and half years after its launch, Al Jazeera America has announced it is shutting down; Argentineans take to the streets as the one of the country's most prominent radio hosts is fired; Turkey's government issues a ban on coverage after the suicide bomb in Istanbul, but the Turkish media report the story anyway.
Mission impossible: Reporting Pakistan's northwest
In our feature segment this week, we follow one journalist reporting from Pakistan's northwestern region of Waziristan.
For more than a decade, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of northwest Pakistan, known as FATA, has been the target of American drone strikes - one of the toughest stories to cover on the ground.
Reporting on the effects of drone strikes on the people there has led to a number of journalists getting killed. FATA, and especially Waziristan on its southern edges, is militarised and locked down. Few reporters even try to go there.
The Listening Post's Meenakshi Ravi finds one journalist telling the human side of a story usually told from a safe distance - either from the air or the centres of power conducting the strikes.
And finally, getting the perfect picture on social media sites like Instagram - one that captures that seemingly fleeting moment - can be a lot of work.
Mystery Hour is a late night talk show in the US that also produces comedy skits. This offering looks at the labour-intensive Instagram feed from the photographer husband's point of view. Instagram Husband has been viewed more than 4 million times online.

London, 1868. The Industrial Revolution unleashes an incredible age of invention, transforming the lives of millions with technology once thought impossible. Opportunities created during this period have people rushing to London to engage in this new world, a world no longer controlled by kings, emperors, politicians, or religion, but by a new common denominator: money. Not everyone is able to enjoy the benefits of this boom, however. Introducing Jacob Frye, who with the help of his twin sister Evie, will change the fate of millions in Assassin’s Creed® Syndicate. Rise to rally and lead the underworld to break the corrupt stranglehold on London in a visceral adventure filled with action, intrigue, and brutal combat.
All console recordings are on Elgato HD60 or using Xsplit on PC.

In 1868, at the tail end of the Industrial Revolution, with the Assassin Brotherhood all but eradicated, twins Jacob (Paul Amos) and Evie Frye (Victoria Atkin) leave Crawley for London and arrive to find a city controlled by the Templars, with both the Church and the Monarchy losing their power. Raised as Assassins to follow the Creed, Jacob and Evie aim to take back the city from Templar control by infiltrating and uniting London's criminal underworld, aided by notable figures of the era such as novelist Charles Dickens, biologist Charles Darwin and inventor Alexander Graham Bell, foundational philospher of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale and Queen Victoria.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate marks the first time in the series where the player can freely switch between two different protagonists. It will also be the first main entry in the series to feature a playable female protagonist. Male lead Jacob Frye is meant to be more of a hot-headed brawler, specialized in close combat, while his twin sister Evie is strong in stealth and relies on her intelligence and wit. The Assassins' main weapons this time around include brass knuckles, a compact revolver, a cane sword and the traditional Nepalese curved kukri knife and combat is faster-paced than before with latency having been cut in half and multiple enemies attacking the player at once.

On World Press Freedom Day, Al Jazeera speaks with the Network's Chairman Sheikh Hamad Bin Thamer Al-Thani, Mostefa Souag, the network's director-general, Kate O'Brian, president of Al Jazeera America and Tarik Dodic, the managing director at Al Jazeera Balkans, to discuss the state of media freedoms around the world.
Dr Elobaid Ahmed Elobaid, the head of the UN's human rights hub for South West Asia and the Arab region, and Joel Simon, the executive director at the Committee to Protect Journalists, and Irina Bokova, the director-general of UNESCO, also join us to mark the day.

On November 6, Rethink Institute hosted a panel discussion to release a major new report, Diminishing Press Freedom in Turkey. The report discusses that in the last couple of years, hundreds of journalists critical of the government were dismissed, significant number of media outlets was handed over to loyalists, some media owners were bought off with government tenders. Enormous tax evasion fines were levied against those that dared to remain critical. The outcome is a dismal state of press freedom, contributing to overall decline of the Turkish democracy.
Press Freedom Panel
The panel discussion featured,

He served as president of the Organization of News Ombudsmen (ONO) 2003–2004, and in 2014 received The Special Award of the European Press Prize for his fight against censorship. He is currently a Fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center for Media, Politics and Public Policy.
Ilhan Tanir (@WashingtonPoint), Washington based freelance journalist for number of Turkish publications, including BBC Turkish, Diken.Com.Tr and Posta212.
